Sat., Feb. 12: Meeting/Program: “The Underground Railroad South of Chicago” with Larry McClellan

February 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 pm

Images of Harried Tubman, Underground Railroad, and Jan Ton and wife.

Sat., Feb. 12 at 10 a.m.: SSGHS president Dr. Larry McClellan presents “The Underground Railroad South of Chicago.”

Thousands of freedom seekers/fugitive slaves passed through and near the Calumet region in the decades before the Civil War. Particular assistance was provided by those living near the Dolton Ferry and Bridge, including the family of Jan and Aagje Ton. Since 2000, local community members and groups across the Calumet region have been exploring the options for education and development related to the Underground Railroad.

McClellan, along with Tom Shepherd, founded the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project. This was an outgrowth of an earlier project called C/CURE.
