Sat., Sept. 9, 2023: (in-person only) Donald & Tanya Smith, “History of Chicagoland in Maps.”

September 9, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Saturday, September 9, 2023: Donald and Tanya Smith of Greeley-Howard-Norlin-Smith present “History of Chicagoland in Maps.”  The Smiths are closing their company, which has done land surveying and map making since 1854.  They begin with the brief history of how and why the land in the U.S. was originally divided & sold.  A brief history follows of their family’s 168+ year Land Surveying & Map Making business.  The Smiths will talk about the most interesting projects, including some of the many boundary disputes, from their historical archive.  In addition to their Power Point presentation, they will display some antique instruments as well as some of the antique & vintage maps, plats, atlases from their unique historical archives.

>>> This presentation is in-person only at SSGHS, and will not be available via Zoom.

About Donald and Tanya:
Greeley – Howard – Norlin & Smith [GHNS] is the oldest Land Surveying & Map Making business in the Chicago Metropolitan area. It was established in 1854 , when Samuel Greeley officially began the Chicago practice, initially under the name of Samuel Greeley, Surveyor.

During 168+ years in business, GHNS’ surveyors walked/measured virtually every city block in Chicago and many many properties in suburbs, including Northwest Indiana. GHNS family business accumulated extensive business archives that include approximately 500,000 plats of surveys; over 10,000 copies of plats of recorded subdivisions; 190 atlases; and thousands of pages of other supporting documents/maps.

Donald Smith (Samuel Greeley’s grand-grand- grand- grand nephew) is the current owner of the business. The more recent history of the business reveals that Donald’s whole family as well has been involved in the Land Surveying & Map Making business in Chicago Metropolitan area, including his father, Earl Smith; brothers, Charles & John, and other family members. Donald is the 5th generation of licensed land surveyors in his family .

Donald Smith grew up in a family environment where land surveying dominated the topics of conversation at family gatherings, including stories of Grand Uncle Greeley being called as an expert witness for trials in which then-attorney, Abraham Lincoln litigated land disputes involving the Illinois Central Railroad. We found in our archives collection of maps/plats, prepared by Mr. Greeley, that were used in the above-noted court cases from the late 1850s. Mr. Greeley and then-attorney, Abraham Lincoln, participated in two court cases together.

For more information about our company, and to view some of the antique maps of the Chicagoland from our collection, please visit our website www.DonaldSmithSurveyor.com (under development).

Tanya  joined the family and business in 1995, and is currently working hard on preserving this historical archive for current and future researchers.
