Internet Archive is a treasure trove of genealogical materials. Learn how to use this resource. After the program, join us for refreshments at the SSGHS Library, at the west entrance to the building.

Just in time for Veterans Day, Janis Minor Forté presents “Even Gangsters Had to Register: World War I Draft Registration Cards and the Selective Service Records They Produced.”

When you think of gangsters you don’t associate them with the men who served this country in World War I. The gangsters of the time period are the hoodlums, cut throats, hucksters and crooks of the era. The men who served in World War I were the good and patriotic citizens of this country. From this presentation you will learn of the different designs of the Draft Cards and information they contain. You will also see why your ancestor was identified as 4F and why farmers were not drafted. This presentation will also reveal the multitude of records produced by these WWI Draft Card and the Selective Service Records produced by the Draft Cards.

Janis Minor Forté is an experienced genealogist, lecturer and writer and has presented at national, state and local genealogical conferences including OGS, RootsTech, NGS, and FGS.

Are you putting off researching an ancestor because you believe you need a 2 or 3 hour block of time? Our first meeting of 2020 will be a recorded webinar with Thomas MacEntee called “Genealogy Pit Stop: Research in 15 Minute Increments.” Thomas will explain how to use the Genealogy Pit Stop concept to succeed in the research race. Afterward, join us outside the SSGHS Library for refreshments and fellowship, and to shop our sale carts.

Church records can provide many valuable details about our ancestors. They may include birth, marriage, death, and relationship information not easily found elsewhere. This presentation covers the types of records typically available, the information they contain, and the ways in which you can access the records. Ginger Frere, MLIS, is a professional researcher who provides a variety of research services to authors, professional historians, film makers, and individuals interested in genealogy and family history. Her primary research interests include Chicago history and the creation of online tools for genealogists. She was one of the driving forces behind the development of ChicagoAncestors.org. In addition to researching, Ginger is a frequent speaker in the Chicagoland area and a regular instructor in Chicago’s Newberry Library Adult Education seminar program. Also, she is a Newberry Scholar-in-Residence.

(For information on how to access the meeting, please email the society at info@ssghs.org no later than Friday, June 12.)

The library closed on March 17th before the stay at home order took effect.

Our July 11 meeting and program will be a virtual program on Zoom.
Jason Kruski will tell us about DNA Painter. Jason has given two previous presentations for us and we are glad to have him back. Jason Kruski has been utilizing genetic genealogy to further his family tree ever since his first home DNA test, thirteen years ago. He is the author of A Guide to Chicago and Midwestern Polish American Genealogy and is a speaker on the subjects of DNA and Polish genealogical research. His website is https://kruskigenealogy.webs.com .

You have purchased a DNA test. Now what? How can I use it to further my family tree and help break down brick walls? DNA Painter is a new tool that helps its users merge genealogical data from the paper trail of known relatives to help find connections among others who share cM of DNA with you. Learn more about how to apply your DNA results with this presentation on how to use the latest technology to help create a richer family tree. DNA Painter is a website for genealogists and family history enthusiasts who have taken an autosomal DNA test.

Interpreting test results can be a challenge. DNA Painter helps by providing a platform where you can:
• Take stock of what you already know about your family line by building or importing a tree.
• Use the amount of DNA you share with matches (measured in centiMorgans) to look at how you might be related to them with interactive tools.
• Try chromosome mapping to visualize the actual segments of DNA you share with matches to deduce which parts of your DNA you inherited from specific ancestors in your tree.

WPA History and Achievements: Kathryn Barrett will present the objectives, development, and history of achievements of the WPA which employed men and women from 1935 to June 1943 to alleviate unemployment and poverty. Maybe you had an ancestor who worked for the WPA.

Barrett is a 37-year volunteer at the National Archives and Record Administration in Chicago. She has taught genealogy courses and lectured at numerous genealogy libraries and organizations. She is a member of the Wisconsin Historical Society and the National Genealogical Society.

Kathryn’s presentation will be given in person at our library, now that we have reopened. We will follow all CDC guidelines including wearing masks and social distancing. The program is free and open to the public.

Chicago’s pre-eminence as the largest metropolitan area in the middle of North America is a result of the fortuitous conditions of access across the Mid-Continental watershed divide created by glacial processes over the past 10,000 years. The Chicago Portage water passage has been used by Native Americans and European voyageurs. It was ultimately exploited by the famous reversal of the Chicago River by the Sanitary and Ship Canal, which led to great economic and population growth in the Region but also created environmental costs. The program includes a lecture, visual Images, and a live performance of an original song based on these topics. David Dolak is an environmental scientist, musician, luthier, and outdoorsman. He has worked at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Argonne National Laboratory. David is currently Professor of Instruction Columbia College Chicago.

The year 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower landing at Plymouth Rock. Did you ever wonder if you have any Mayflower ancestors? Our October 10th program will discuss a brief history about the Mayflower passengers and their voyage, as well as various aspects of conducting Mayflower research and how to document them. The program via Zoom will include online and paper sources.

Our speaker is Jennifer Warner. She has been doing genealogy for 42 years. Her mother started teaching Jennifer and her sister early on about where their family came from and how to research their family history. Jennifer is a member of 13 lineage societies and counting. She holds offices in many lineage groups and genealogical societies. She is currently President of DuPage County Genealogical Society and Treasurer for Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, Illinois Bartlett Kelley Circle #135. She loves sharing her knowledge of family history and likes helping people learn about their heritage.

When did your ancestors immigrate, from where did they leave, why did they leave, how did they get here? These are questions that we all hope to find the answers. For our German ancestors, the answers depend on when they left. The history of Germany affected the immigration of our ancestors. This program should give you insights into the immigration. Join us on Zoom at 10 am and hopefully Steve can clear up your confusion.

Terminal City: Chicago’sPassenger Stations in the Golden Era of Rail

From after the Civil War until the rise of commercial jet travel in the early 1960s, anyone wishing to travel long distances across the North American continent likely did so via passenger rail. It is also likely that these folks passed through Chicago’s passenger rail stations on their journeys. Chicago was the gateway between east and west and home to six large stations serving the needs of a majority of the long-haul rail companies. This program will give us a glimpse of the experiences of the passengers who passed through those terminals– each of which had its own unique look and “personality.” We will see that Chicago was indeed the Gateway City for anyone traveling across the country in the era of travel by rail.

Our guest speaker Jane G. Haldeman is a Chicago-area based professional genealogist and owner of It’s Relative with more than 25 years of research experience. She lectures on a wide range of topics both locally and nationally. She was the National Co-Chair for the Federation of Genealogical Societies 2019 Conference in Washington, D.C. She is a former president of the Illinois State Genealogical Society and is the author of A Genealogist’s Guide to Springfield, Illinois. Many of our ancestors were farmers and they left valuable records, including deeds and probate records. From 1937 to 1946, the Farmer’s Home Administration gave low-interest loans to small farmers. These records are in the local branches of the National Archives in Record Group 96. The records include family records and information about the farm. Agricultural census records, newspaper articles and obituaries, trade papers, and other agricultural records can give a picture of your ancestor’s life.

Thomas MacEntee speaks on the 1950 Census

Many genealogists remember the amount excitement in April 2012 around the release of the 1940 US Census. Following the “72 Year Rule” for records at the National Archives, the results of the 1950 US Census will be made public on Friday, April 1, 2022. It’s never too early to prepare for this valuable data related to US genealogy research! Participants will get up to speed on the history of the 1950 US Census, why the 1950 US Census form is radically different than previous forms, and how the data will be accessed. In addition we’ll cover what you can do NOW to prepare for the release of the 1950 US Census as well as volunteer projects related to indexing and finding aids. Finally, we’ll cover how you can always get the latest information related to the release of the 1950 US Census data!

What happens when a “tech guy” with a love for history gets laid off during The Great Recession of 2008? You get me, Thomas MacEntee, a genealogy professional who’s also a blogger, educator, author, social media connector, marketer, network builder and more. Thomas was laid off after a 25-year career in the information technology field, so he started his own genealogy-related business called High Definition Genealogy. Currently Thomas shares many of his articles and videos for free at GenealogyBargains.com !
“I’m a lifelong learner with a background in a multitude of topics and I’ve finally figured out what I do best: teach, inspire, instigate, and serve as a curator and go-to-guy for concept nurturing and inspiration. I believe in success, and that we all succeed when we help each other find success.”

Show-N-Tell provides our members with an opportunity to share their genealogy stories and journeys orally and visually. If you are willing to share a most interesting/spectacular discovery, we can’t wait to see it!! Stories, pictures, documents, and family treasures!! All are welcome!!

Zoom provides an online capability for us to share your documents, pictures, and artifacts in the following manner:

1. Placing physical objects in front of your camera for your audience to see

2. “Sharing Your Screen” – If you have your visual aid (document, pictures or artifact) in a format you can display on your computer screen, you can “Share Screen” with the others in the meeting. NOTE: This will have to have to already be on your computer desktop before you are able to share it.

For those who would like to practice sharing items on Zoom, come to a Zoom Tutorial Session on Saturday May 1 at 10 am.

Please RSVP by Apr 30, 2021 for this Tutorial by emailing Don Gordon at ddg175@gmail.com.

Thank you very much for locating the obituary for Jane and her brother. The information was very helpful. I have found “Cook County” a very difficult resource to work with.

Again, many thanks.

Susan, Florida

…you have some unexpected surprises. I was more than thrilled to receive a copy of a thank you letter
(WWII Harvey Letters) my father wrote from the south pacific during World War II. He said he was really happy to get the Christmas package from the Harvey committee which included a real American candy bar. I’ve been wondering what kind it was. I also found a history of the Methodist church on Lexington Ave. which mentioned my great grandparents. I hope to be able to explore your shelves again in the near future. Thanks for being there.

Jan

Thanks for all your service with the SSGHS. This organization is a godsend for the genealogy of the south suburban area and then some. The records they’ve kept from the trash dump are pure gold. Those not presently into genealogy might consider supporting now, because family members down the road will certainly appreciate.

Carl, Illinois

As a long time member, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and all the other volunteers who make SSGHS so important to those of us who live far away. I live in New Hampshire and although we have been to IL researching, many years ago, we can hardly wait to see your readings of First Lutheran. On our brief visit there, we found dozens of graves of our family members. Please take an extra photo of the tombstone of Christoph and Therese, my husband’s g g grandparents, as we lost the one that we took. Once again, thanks to all of you.

Louella, New Hampshire

Received the photos yesterday. I was very impressed by the details and quantity of pictures, which made it feel as though I had taken the trip myself. Besides the excitement of finally seeing the family headstone, the dates on the tombstones have helped my research a great deal and brought me that much closer to my family that was scattered during the Depression.

Although I did not recognize any names on the other headstones you photographed, it still made the place more real for me. I expect that I may need your services again as I uncover more family history down the road. In fact if you are able to take photos of actual landmarks like houses or churches, I’m almost certain I will need your help again.

Thank you again!

Jason, California

I received the photos back from Ray Bergman this week and he did a fantastic job. I’m quite happy with the extras he did. In addition to many wonderful photos, Ray and his wife gave a wonderfully detailed information paper on all the people and dates found on the headstones and even those people without headstones. He further detailed a map on the location of each of the headstones at the cemetery. I will order another group of photos at Cedar Park Cemetery in Chicago.

Thank you again for all the help provided and thank you to Ray Bergman.

Harry, Kentucky

Thank you very much for the photos! They came out great. I appreciate you taking time to help me with a nice addition to my genealogy.

Sincerely,

Jody, Kentucky

Ray:  (Ray Bergman) Info received!  It is the next best thing to going there myself!  You did a marvelous job!  Thanks muchly.  I do have another request after seeing your pix, I spied a small stone in the tall grass that said WILLIAM DUBREUIL.  Wm. & Mattie’s family were my father’s second cousins and I would like pictures of all of the DuBreuil stones that you can find.  I will put a check in the mail for you when I get back from the library today.

Yvonne, Michigan

I have received the cemetery photos that you did for me. You (Joe Staackmann) did a great job!!! I was hoping for more information and although some cemeteries are full of new facts for me, others are just NOT. It was not a total bust however, and I am sure when I get all the info it will be a correct and complete picture.

I hope to be able to send another request for the Mt. Olivet Cemetery soon.

I wanted to thank you for your organizations representation for me in the Chicago area and for the important work you do in providing family history data to people like me.
Have a wonderful summer.

Nancie, Texas

Pam Taylor is our speaker for our Sept. 11 meeting. Digging Into Cemetery Research, this presentation covers a multitude of sources used to locate death certificates/records. Pam also provides information about different types of cemeteries, grave markers, and their symbols. Of particular interest will
be illustrations of burial permits and coroner records. This presentation is an in-depth look at cemetery research with beautiful photos and source examples.

Of her experiences, Pam says, “I have been working on my family history for over 25 years, searching the United States, Canada, and across the pond. My greatest success stories come not from the internet websites but from digging into libraries, archives, historical societies, cemeteries, and courthouses. I love using FREE genealogical websites such as State Archives, Libraries Local history databases, FamilySearch.org, Poznan Project, and so many, many more. For the last 13 years, I have worked at the New Lenox Public Library, where I am the Genealogy specialist which includes presenting genealogy programs and helping patrons with their genealogical research.”

We plan for this to be a “hybrid meeting” — that is, in-person as well as via Zoom. (We’ve never done a hybrid general meeting before, so please bear with us!) See below for Zoom login information.

Unmarried immigrant women living outside the family unit generate a different set of records, which makes piecing together their ancestry more of a challenge.  This presentation examines a combination of family stories, photographs and both direct and indirect evidence to rebuild the journey of an immigrant Czech family in Ohio and Nebraska.

Sat., April 9: “The Monee Creamery” presented by the Monee Historical Society.

In 2011, the Monee Creamery building was exactly two weeks away from the wrecking ball. An important piece of the history of Monee, as well as all of Will County would have been lost forever. The structure has been at the center of Monee community life for over a century, but was deemed unworthy of saving and Mayor had slated it for demolition.

A group of concerned citizens banded together to fight the building’s “Death Sentence.” Their goal was to raise awareness of the demolition plans, formulate a plan to save the mid- 19th century two-story Lockport limestone structure, and restore it for use. In 2016 the Monee Creamery was granted Will County landmark status. After a generous grant from the Village of Monee, the Creamery was completely renovated and the work was completed in early 2021.

Sat., June 11, 2022: Meeting/Program, “Power Tools For Genetic Genealogy at My Heritage” with Michelle Bray Wilson.

Michelle Bray Wilson has been active in the genealogy community for more than a dozen years. She speaks throughout the Midwest, most frequently on genetic genealogy, French Canada, ancient ancestry, and creating family history books. Michelle has been a featured speaker for Chicago Public Library, DuPage County and Lake County society conferences. She is a former president of CAGGNI, the Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois, and is currently Registrar at a local DAR chapter.
We will explore the wonderful toolkit for DNA at MyHeritage, and you will see why MyHeritage is a genetic genealogist’s dream site. What does MH offer that many of the others don’t? Here’s a sampling –
• Superior Shared Matching – invaluable for adoptee work
• Chromosome Browsing – essential for true triangulation and Lazarus work
• Certainty around Theory of Relativity predictions
• Cluster Analysis
• A matching pool that’s significantly more international
• Bonus topic: a couple of MyHeritage’s other unique tools. Its not just genetic genealogy at My Heritage

room containing 1950s furnishingsSat., July 9: Field Trip. Members will travel to the Park Forest House and the Monee Creamery. Our first stop will be the Park Forest House Museum, located at 227 Monee Road, Park Forest, Illinois, and inside St. Mary’s Catholic Church (former school building; photo at left). Bring $5 and a mask. If you plan on carpooling, you may call a fellow member and meet at our library at 9:30 a.m. or just go to Park Forest directly. The tour begins at 10 a.m.

Since the 1950 U.S. Census was recently released, this is the perfect time to visit the 1950s Park Forest House Museum. Whether you found yourself or your parents in the census, this nostalgic look at Park Forest’s unique history as the fully planned post-World War II suburb is sure to bring back memories.

Our second stop will be the Monee Creamery. We heard about its renovation earlier this year. The old creamery, built in the 1870s, is the only remaining limestone structure in Monee and is Monee’s first designated historic landmark. The preservation effort was launched by Christi Holsten, a Monee native, who spoke to our group in March. Her ancestor was one of the village founders and briefly owned the creamery property back in the 1870s. The “Save the Creamery Foundation” evolved into the Monee Historical Society in 2013. The Creamery building has been nicely restored and is now the Monee Heritage Center.

If you are hungry after these two stops, there is a new Polish-American restaurant called Nad Tatrami (which means “over the Tatra Mountains”) at the stoplight at 25812 South Governors Highway in Monee, Illinois. (Details and menu are at https://www.nadtatrami.net/) Lunch is not part of the tour, but feel free to make your own arrangements. We hope you will enjoy this fun and educational field trip.

Sat., Aug. 13: “Pullman: The Man, the Company, the Historic Park” with Dr. Kenneth Schoon, who discusses his book of the same name.

Pullman is the name of a man, a company, a town (today a Chicago neighborhood), and a type of railroad car.  The name Pullman brings to mind luxurious accommodations on Pullman cars and identifies the porters who served in those rail cars and the first major railroad strike.  The story of his company town encompasses important segments in the history of urban planning, industrial efficiency, and labor/management conflict.  More than 160 years ago, George Mortimer Pullman realized that many railroad passengers would pay extra for comfort.  In 1869, he founded Pullman’s Palace Car Co.  He built luxurious passenger cars with comfortable, private sleeping accommodations and attentive service.  In 1880, he created the Town of Pullman to consolidate his factory complex and provide housing and living facilities to attract a productive and skilled workforce.  The town built of brick row houses had various types from executive double-houses, skilled craftsman, workers cottages, 2-flat, 3-flat, and 4-flat row houses, and boarding houses.  The Pullman Land Association owned and leased all the buildings in the town.  It was optional to live in town, and about two-thirds of the workers rented in the Town of Pullman, and some residents took in boarders.  There was the Pullman Savings & Loan Bank, and the workers received competitive wages, not paid in company script.  The commercial buildings, such as the Arcade or Market Hall, had store spaces leased to private businesses.  Also, the town had a school, library, post office, fire department, livery stables, church spaces, and more.

Today, 95% of the original town still stands and is the only landmark district in the Chicago-land area to have all the designations of Illinois Register of Historic Places (1969), National Historic Landmark District (1970), Chicago Landmark District (1972), and Pullman National Monument (2015).

After teaching for more than forty years, Ken Schoon is professor emeritus at Indiana University Northwest and has authored many history books. Copies of Pullman: The Man, the Company, the Historic Park will be available for purchase.

**UPDATE: Our SSGHS Library has no phone or internet service as of Sept. 9. This may interfere with our plans to use Zoom to view our Saturday program. We will try to use a mobile hotspot, but may not get a good signal. Thanks for understanding.**

Join Tina Beaird to hear the many ways you can access cool details about your ancestors by using school records like yearbooks, school schedules, teacher’s registers, school newspapers, alumni directories and much more. This is one class you won’t want to ditch!

Tina Beaird is the owner of Tamarack Genealogy and is the Genealogy/Local History Librarian at the Plainfield Public Library. She lectures nationally on military research, genealogical methodology, Scottish records, and archival preservation. She is 1st Vice President of the Illinois State Genealogical Society. She is also on the governing boards of the Northern Illinois Historical League and the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board. Tina volunteers her time with several local historical and genealogical societies scanning and indexing historic records. Occasionally, Tina finds time to research her own family tree, which she has been pursuing for over 25 years.
